A superb example of Victorian Jewellery, this spectacular Diamond Starburst Brooch is a masterpiece of construction, with uniquely shaped layers rising to give a 3D appearance and intricate shape. The Victorians were fascinated by science and during Victoria’s reign (1857-1901) new technologies and discoveries were reflected in fashions. Influenced by the wealth of visible comets, the Victorian jewellers of the day adorned ladies with an array of beautiful constellation themed jewellery. The Starburst shaped brooch is a classic design, encrusted with Old Cut Diamonds, they brightly sparkle like stars. The Old Cut Round Diamonds have been assessed as H/I colour and Si clarity. Skilfully set in a combination of Claw, Grain and Pave, the diamonds fill every available space and have an impressive 5.60ct total diamond weight. Part of the joy of antique jewellery is researching and testing. This brooch did not have any markings to indicate the metals used, so we sent it to Goldsmith’s Hall Assay Office for testing. The official letter, which we will gladly include with the brooch reveals the back of the brooch is crafted from 12ct Gold, with the catch, pin and hinge using a purity closer to modern 9ct gold. The diamond settings are crafted from Silver, at a purity of 995, higher than the modern standard of Sterling Silver at 925. Victorian Jewellery often used Silver, a metal chosen to complement the white of the diamonds, and with time develop a darker patina to mimic the night sky for this stellar brooch. Respecting the age and beauty of this brooch our in-house workshop, to preserve the natural patina has not polished the silver, and only cleaned the diamonds to renew their original sparkle. Gold Arts is delighted to offer such an exquisite piece of collectable antique jewellery, in wonderful condition. A reflection of regal glamour, Queen Elizabeth 2nd wears a similar star brooch left to her by Lady Jardine a member of the old clan Jardine of Scotland, a true example of “quality never goes out of fashion”. Dimensions: 44mm x 44mm x 16mm; Clasp: roll close pin; weight: 14.4 grams, Stock reference OGA 320 / 00003674
