Jewellery Repairs

At each of our independent Gold Arts stores we have a dedicated onsite workshop. These workshops each have highly trained Goldsmiths who are capable of all manner of repairs. This ranges from simple ring sizing and chain repairs to complete re-tipping or re-working of a ring. This means that all repairs are carried out on site giving you the peace of mind that they are secure and looked after.

In all of our stores we do ring re-sizing and our staff will advise you on the best option for you, or you can meet the Goldsmith in that store who will come and meet you and go through the exact process. There are many options when sizing a ring. You can stretch it up or down or the traditional cutting of the band and adding a piece of metal. Another option is to add ball shots or a spring on the inside of the band this helps in preventing the head of the ring spinning round if the ring can’t be made any smaller.

There is no need to book an appointment to discuss your jewellery repair requirements as all of our team is trained in advising you on the best way to repair your items, just come into your local store. Where a member of staff will warmly greet you, and they will then advise on the type of repair needed and the expected cost. Your item will then be booked into our repair system and the expected completion time frame will be given. This can range from a couple of hours to a week or two, as it depends on how complicated the repair is. We will keep you informed of any changes in costs or time frame either by phone or text message.

Rhodium Plating and Gilding:

Plating is a manufacturing process in which a thin layer of metal coats a substrate. With jewellery this is generally achieved through electroplating.

Rhodium (Rh) is in the same group of metals as platinum, and is used to mainly to plate white gold, platinum and occasionally silver. It adds a brighter, silvery white colour to these metals. The properties are similar to platinum and gold in the way that it is nonreactive, but does wear off over time, and needs to be reapplied periodically.

White Gold is not a naturally occurring metal and is produced from an alloy of yellow gold and other alloys. These alloys can be palladium and silver but it isn’t completely possible to remove the yellow colour from white gold, this is why these items are Rhodium plate rings.

Gilding is similar to Rhodium plating, except it deposits a very thin layer of high carat gold to yellow gold jewellery and increase the intensity of the yellow.

All white Gold and Platinum jewellery made and sold by Gold Arts is rhodium plated, and we offer a Rhodium plate service for any of your jewellery that requires Rhodium Plating.

Depending on how the piece of jewellery is worn the plating will wear differently. If the piece is worn regularly it will need to be re-plated more often.
